BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team finished in third with a final score of 84 points at the fifth annual Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon in Bloomington on Saturday, April 27. The Hoosiers swept Alabama in the morning session, while IU's First Novice 8 crew beat Notre Dame in the afternoon session. The Fighting Irish finished first with 118 points to take the Dale England Cup trophy, while Iowa took second with 98 points and Alabama finished fourth with 60 points.

Highlighting the weekend was IU's First Novice 8 boat, made up of coxswain Nora Happ, Rebecca Brougher, Aly Schmit, Devory Dannemiller, Caroline Comey, Alex McHugh, Monica Funk and Ariel Tourner, beating Iowa on Friday and then topping Alabama in Saturday's morning session by 18 seconds. The Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 7:24.7, ahead of the Crimson Tide who finished in 7:42.2. In the afternoon session, the wind picked up and created some chop on the water. The Hoosiers toughed out the rough water conditions and knocked off Notre Dame (8:09.8) by five seconds to take first in 8:04.9.

"Great racing for the Novice 8+ this weekend," said Indiana's novice coach Megan Mitchell. "Each and every one of the rowers and coxswain really stepped up to the challenges they were faced with for each event. They raced hard, they raced well and they raced with a lot of heart."

Also during Saturday's morning session, Indiana opened the day against Alabama, sweeping every race against the Crimson Tide, starting with the Second Varsity 4 race. The Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 8:18.5, eight seconds ahead of Alabama (8:23.2). In the First Varsity 4 race, Indiana took first in 8:08.2, eight seconds ahead of Alabama (8:19.7). The Hoosiers' Second Varsity 8 boat finished in 7:14.3 to beat Alabama by 12 seconds as the Crimson Tide crossed the finish line in 7:26.1. IU ended the morning session with a time of 7:05.9 in the First Varsity 8 race to top Alabama (7:14.8) by nine seconds.

The Hoosiers opened the afternoon session finishing second in the Third Varsity 4 race with a time of 9:26.8, 11 seconds ahead of Notre Dame (9:37.7) and just 11 seconds behind Iowa (9:15.9). Indiana took second in the Second Varsity 4 race with a time of 9:46.6, beating Notre Dame's `B' (10:13.9) boat by 27 seconds. Notre Dame's `A' boat finished in first with a time of 8:59.3. In the First Varsity 4 race, Indiana finished in 9:24.6, while the Irish took first in 9:14.0. Indiana took second in the Second Varsity 8 boat with a time of 7:56.4 and also took second in the First Varsity 8 boat in 7:55.0.

Indiana will take the next few weeks to prepare for the 2013 Big Ten Rowing Championships, held at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis on Sunday, May 19.
