BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Baseball (37-11, 14-6 Big Ten) failed to the solve the riddle of Brandon Magallones Saturday afternoon, notching just two hits off the Northwestern starting pitcher in a 12-1 loss to the Wildcats (22-22, 9-14). Kyle Schwarber did get to him in the seventh inning though, crushing his Big Ten-leading 13th homerun of the season.
Northwestern led off the game with a double followed by three consecutive infield hits to grab a lead it would not relinquish. After a four-run first, the Wildcats would go on to plate a pair of runs in each of the even-numbered frames. Magallones improved to 3-3 on the season by allowing a lone run on two hits, no walks and six strikeouts in a complete game winner.
In addition to Schwarber's solo shot in the seventh, Dustin DeMuth also recorded a single in the fifth for the only other flaw on Magallones' tab.
With four conference contests remaining, the Hoosier are less than a half game back from the Minnesota Golden Gophers (12-5) for the top spot in the Big Ten standings. Indiana is contention for its first regular season league title since 1949. Game Three of the series with Northwestern is slated for a 1:05 pm start on Sunday.
