BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team extended its winning-streak to four games this afternoon after defeating visiting Robert Morris, 4-1. The four consecutive wins is the longest string of victories since the Hoosiers four-game win streak that spanned from August 24 through September 7 during the 2012 campaign. Indiana has also outscored its opponents 21-1 during that stretch, the most in four straight games in program history.
Maggie Olson made five saves for Indiana in goal and improves to 4-2 on the year. Her shutout streak was snapped at three games, which still represents the most consecutive shutout performances by an IU goalkeeper in program history.
The Hoosiers outshot their opponent for the fourth straight contest, firing 17 against the Colonials who managed 11 in today’s game.
Of Indiana’s eight shots on goal, four found their way between the posts. Audra Heilman, Danielle McNally and Mariella Grote scored one goal apiece for the second straight game, while Sydney Supica earned her second goal of the year. Hannah McDermott, Karen Lorite and Emily Bowker picked up assists.
The Hoosiers and Colonials remained scoreless deep into the first half of regulation. It would be a Heilman goal in the 26th minute that would finally put IU on the board. The junior was well-positioned in front of the cage, allowing her to collect a rebound on a shot by Lorite. Heilman quickly fired and sent it into the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Just three minutes later, Indiana capitalized on its second penalty corner of the game. Supica took the initial shot at the net, but RMU’s Erin McKenzie made the save. McNally found the rebound and struck for Indiana’s second goal of the game.
With under a minute to go in the first half, the Hoosiers took a 3-0 lead on a goal from Grote. McDermott got credit for the assist after finding Grote on the break just right of center of the circle.
Indiana’s shutout streak came to an end in the 41st minute after Robert Morris scored on a penalty corner, but the Hoosiers would not surrender another goal through the remainder of the contest.
The Hoosiers scored its final goal of the game on a penalty corner in the 67th minute. Lorite inserted the pass to Bowker who set up Supica for her second goal of the year.
Indiana will continue play in Bloomington on Saturday, Sept. 21 when they host Ohio at the IUFH Complex. Game time is set for 1 p.m. ET.
