BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team’s six-game win streak was snapped this afternoon when the Hoosiers fell 4-0 in their Big Ten Conference opener with No. 8 Penn State at the IUFH Complex. The loss brings IU to 6-3 on the year and 0-1 in B1G action, while PSU improves to 7-3 (1-0 B1G).
Indiana struggled to maintain possession at the start, failing to record a shot until the second half of play. The Hoosiers would finish the contest with seven to the Nittany Lion’s 20 and drew three corners to PSU’s 13.
Sydney Supica led IU’s attack with two shots in the contest, one of which on goal, while Rachel Stauffer accounted for Indiana’s second shot on goal this afternoon.
Despite the loss, Maggie Olson (6-3) made nine saves against the Nittany Lions to tie a career-high effort. The last time Olson denied nine shots was in the 2011 season when she recorded nine saves in the Hoosiers’ 4-1 win over No. 15 Northwestern.
Indiana fell behind 1-0 in the fourth minute of play when PSU’s Ashtin Klinger scored on a rebound to give the Nittany Lions the lead.
A goal at 19:51 would put the Hoosiers back two before heading into the half, but Penn State would quickly make it 3-0 with a goal just over two-minutes in after the break.
In the 48th minute, PSU tacked on another goal for a score of 4-0 which would hold for and eventual 4-0 loss for Indiana.
Indiana will close out its eight-game homestand next Friday, Oct. 4 with Michigan State at the IUFH Complex. Game time is set for 3 p.m. ET.
