BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana women's soccer team (5-9-1, 1-7-1 Big Ten) suffered a 3-0 loss to Michigan on Saturday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Sarah Stone made four saves for the Hoosiers while Bekah White had two shots.
"I thought we played a fantastic 44 minutes in the second half," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "We have to figure out a way to start games like that. I think if we would have played like that in the first half, I'm not sure they would have scored. We are still working. Our season isn't over. We just have to find a way to fight a little harder."
Statistically, the game was nearly even, as Michigan held a 8-6 edge in shots and 6-4 advantage in corner kicks. But out of the eight shots for UM, seven of them were on goal while none of the Hoosiers shots were on goal.
Michigan came out firing right from the start, forcing Stone to make a save in the fourth minute and then a spectacular diving save in the 12th minute to keep the game scoreless. A third save in the 14th minute thwarted another UM attack but in the 15th minute, the Wolverines got on the board.
After getting in behind the IU defenders, Madisson Lewis was able to touch the ball past a diving Stone, who was off her line. As the ball trickled towards the goal, defender Tori Keller attempted to make the save, but as she attempted to slide to stop the ball on the line, there was just enough momentum in the ball to completely cross the line before she could clear it and Michigan took a 1-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, the Wolverines sent a ball into the box from 25 yards out on the left side. The driven shot hit the arm of an IU defender in the box and the referee awarded a penalty kick to Michigan. That PK was converted by Nicky Waldeck, and the Hoosiers were facing a 2-0 deficit. That score would remain as the teams headed for the locker room at halftime.
In the second half, Michigan was able to strike quickly again, as they found their third goal of the game in the 47th minute. From there, the Hoosiers began to pressure the Michigan goal with combination play through the middle as well as the outside.
A corner kick by Tori Keller in the 59th minute landed inside the 6-yard box and bounced around but would eventually be cleared out of danger by Michigan before any of the IU players could get a boot on it. Indiana continued to take possession in the midfield and force the attack throughout the half, but coming up with the final piece of the attack in the box wasn't something they were able to come up with on this night.
"We played really well in the second half," redshirt senior Bekah White said. "We just have to find a way to come out like that from the start of the game and not allow the other team to jump out to a quick lead."
The Hoosiers will travel to Iowa and Nebraska next weekend, starting with a matchup on Friday against the Hawkeyes at 8 p.m. ET. The game will be available on BTN Plus.
"In the second half, we had quite a few great individual performances," Berbary said. "So we have to take the day off tomorrow and then try to carry those performances into a very tough weekend away at Iowa and Nebraska."
