LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Indiana University women’s soccer team (5-11-1, 1-9-1 Big Ten) stayed within striking distance of Nebraska for most of the game, but a couple late goals by the Huskers handed the Hoosiers a 3-0 on Sunday.
"I thought we had a good first half," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "We outshot them, but we need to improve our attack in the final third. We knew we needed to get a result today so we pushed numbers forward more than usual. And today, Nebraska was able to take advantage of those numbers we had foward and get a couple late goals. We had to do whatever we had to do today and we just came up short."
The Hoosiers started the game as the aggressors, with Tori Keller registering the game’s first shot in the eighth minute. Indiana followed that up with a pair of corner kicks but were not able to convert.Nebraska then took advantage of their chance in the 12th minute, as Mayme Conroy found Caroline Flynn inside the six-yard box and she put it by IU keeper Sarah Stone to put the Huskers ahead, 1-0.
Indiana’s attack continued to result in shots, but were not able to get them on goal in the first half so the teams went to halftime with Nebraska leading, 1-0.The second half saw Nebraska look to extend its lead, but Stone was there to make a pair of spectacular saves to keep Indiana in the game, trailing by just one goal.In the 78th minute, Nebraska sent a pass into the box that was deflected on goal. The ball got past a diving Stone, hit the post and bounced off the back of Stone and into the goal to put the Huskers ahead 2-0. In the closing minutes, Nebraska added another goal to provide the final score of 3-0.
With the loss, the Hoosiers are eliminated from advancing to the Big Ten Tournament.
"We have two games left but we are going to continue to keep working - as a group - to get better," Berbary said. " We have to turn our focus to getting better so that missing out on the postseason doesn't happen again."
Indiana continues Big Ten play on Saturday when they travel north to take on in-state rival Purdue, with first kick slated for 7 p.m. ET. The game will feature live video streaming on BTN Plus.
