BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team dropped its Big Ten home opener to Michigan, 3-2 on Friday. The loss is the third straight for the Hoosiers (7-3, 0-3 Big Ten) after opening the season 7-0.
“In some ways we did a good job of playing our game,” said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. “We worked on some things against Michigan that I thought were working really well and forced them in to a lot more turnovers than they normally have. The downside of it was we didn’t always take care of the ball and move the ball the way that we should have.”
The scoring started early as Michigan’s Shannon Scavelli put the Wolverines (8-3, 3-1 Big Ten) on the board at the 1:06 mark.
Three minutes later, junior Nicole Volgraf scored her fifth goal of the year to tie up the contest.
Scavelli found the back of the net for the second time to start off the second period on a one-on-one situation with Indiana goalkeeper Maggie Olson.
Indiana junior and Ann Arbor, Mich. native Sydney Supica quickly answered with a powerful unassisted shot from the top of the circle to tie the game, 2-2.
The Wolverines scored the decisive goal at the 51:42 mark off a penalty corner – one of nine Wolverine corners in the contest. The Hoosiers earned just one corner on the day.
“We need to get in our circle and get more opportunities – whether it’s a corner or a shot. We had chances to draw more corners that we did and we just have to be a little more tenacious to get that result,” said Robertson.
Prior to the game, Robertson was honored for her 15 years of leadership to the Indiana field hockey program. Senior Women Administrator Mattie White, former Indiana goalkeeper Haley Exner, as well as senior captains Olson and Audra Heilman presented Robertson with a framed photo.
The Hoosiers return home on Sunday to host No. 4-ranked Duke, the highest-ranked opponent Indiana has played thus far this season.
“You have to take a little attitude about losing this game today and use that fire to take it in to the game on Sunday,” said Robertson. “We’re really hungry to win a game at home and get a really big victory.”
