PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Indiana field hockey team dropped its final game of the season to Rutgers this afternoon, 2-1. The loss dropped the Hoosiers (9-8, 1-7 Big Ten) from contention in next week’s Big Ten Tournament.
Despite Indiana recording three shots to open up the contest, the Scarlet Knights (8-9, 2-6 Big Ten) broke the stalemate in the 18th minute off Nicole Imbriaco’s fifth goal of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Maggie Olson had four saves in the opening period, and eight in the game, bringing her career total to 245 – third in program history behind Molly Pulkrabek (361) and Haley Exner (328).
Less than four minutes into the second period, senior Audra Heilman tied the game at 1-1 as she scored off a rebounded shot from sophomore Kate Barber. The goal was Heilman’s 14th of the year, and she finishes her IU career with 33 goals – third in program history.
Heilman led Indiana with four shots in the game; followed by sophomore Hannah McDermott’s three. Barber and freshman Taylor Pearson each recorded two shots, and Morgan Dye added another for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers outshot the Scarlet Knights 13-11, but were out-cornered, 7-2. On the Scarlet Knights’ final corner of the contest, Ali Stever found Sofia Walia for the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining.
Along with Olson and Heilman, seniors Caitlin Bearish and Corinne Karch also started in their final game for the Hoosiers.
