Hoosiers Fall to Indiana State in Overtime, 65-61

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana dropped its first game of the season to Indiana State on Sunday in overtime, 65-61. Freshman Amanda Cahill scored 13 points and pulled in a career-high 18 rebounds in the loss.
The Hoosiers opened the contest with a 7-0 run, sparked by a 3-pointer from sophomore Larryn Brooks and four points from freshman Tyra Buss. Buss finished the game with 10 points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds.
A 3-pointer from freshman Jess Walters at the 10:36 mark opened up a 12-point lead for the Hoosiers, their biggest advantage of the game.
However, the Sycamores used a 7-0 run to close the gap to 19-15 with 5:05 left in the opening stanza.
Led by 12 rebounds and seven-first half points from Cahill, Indiana extended their advantage to 27-20 at halftime.
The Hoosiers built on their lead out of the break and pushed it to a 10-point lead at the 5:49 mark, sparked by six second-half points from Jenn Anderson.
Indiana State, who never led the game in regulation, closed out the half on a 12-2 run to send the game into overtime tied at 54-54.
A jumper from sophomore Alexis Gassion opened up the overtime period, however the Sycamores used a 6-0 run highlighted by a 3-pointer from Jasmine Grier to take a 62-58 lead with 1:21 remaining.
Karlee McBride’s 3-pointer with 28 seconds left on the clock closed the Indiana deficit to 62-61. But the Hoosiers were unable to respond as the Sycamores sealed the victory at the free throw line.
Cahill achieved her third double-double of the year. Her 18 rebounds ties for the third most by a freshman in IU history.
Indiana will head out on the first road trip of the year as the Hoosiers visit Boston College on Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at 7 p.m. ET.
