BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- The Indiana women’s basketball team opened up the 2014-15 campaign with an 88-49 exhibition victory against University of Indianapolis on Sunday. Freshman Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers with 26 points, while also contributing five steals. Freshman Amanda Cahill made her Indiana debut with a double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.
Led by a quick eight points from Cahill and Buss, the Hoosiers got out to a 14-4 lead at the 14:21 mark. The Greyhounds responded with an 8-2 run led by Kelly Walters, who knocked in three straight baskets for Indianapolis, including two three-pointers.
After trading buckets, Kelly knocked in a bucket for the Greyhounds at the 3:54 mark to cut the Indiana lead to 27-24. However, Indianapolis would not score another field goal in the first period as the Hoosiers capitalized on the drought with a 14-3 run to take a 41-27 lead going into the half.
The Hoosiers, who never trailed in the contest, continued their hot shooting as they opened the second half with a 10-1 run led by a pair of layups from Buss off Hoosier steals.
Indiana shot 50 percent in the second half, including 40 percent from the three-point line. The Hoosier bench added 33 points, compared to zero off the bench for the Greyhounds.
After Nicole Anderson knocked in a pair of free throws for Indianapolis to cut the Indiana lead to 58-37, the Greyhounds were unable to get any closer as the Hoosiers outscored Indianapolis 30-12 in the final 12:35 to preserve the victory.
Sophomore Karlee McBride added 10 points for Indiana, while
sophomores Jenn Anderson, Lyndsay Leikem and freshman Jess Walter each added eight points for Indiana. Indiana’s freshmen and sophomores combined for all of the Hoosiers’ 88 points.
Indiana outrebounded the Greyhounds, 45-30 and outscored Indianapolis in the paint, 46-18. The Hoosiers also were active on the defensive end as they had 13 steals compared to the Greyhounds’ two.
The Hoosiers return to Assembly Hall on Saturday as Indiana opens up the regular season against Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.
