BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's basketball team lost to Michigan on Wednesday night in Assembly Hall, 70-58. Senior Tabitha Gerardot led IU with a season-high 22 points with eight rebounds.
IU (17-9, 4-9) jumped out to an early lead after consecutive layups from Simone Deloach and Gerardot. Michigan went on a 10-3 run midway through the half, but a jumper from Sasha Chaplin gave the Hoosiers their first field goal in nearly two and a half minutes.
The Wolverines (17-10, 8-6) remained in control, but another Gerardot layup at 3:38 gave IU its first lead since 15:04 as the score read 23-22. Three consecutive 3-pointers by Gerardot and Larryn Brooks helped IU to a six-point lead heading into the half.
Indiana finished on an 18-6 run and held Michigan to only two field goals in last eight minutes of the half. The Hoosiers shot 50 percent from beyond the arc, led by Gerardot and Brooks with two 3-pointers a piece.
In the second half, Michigan opened up with an 11-2 run and never looked back. Indiana cut the lead to eight with 7:17 to play after a steal and layup from Alexis Gassion, but that was as close as IU would get.
The Hoosiers shot only 30 percent from the field in the second half and completed just 1-of-13 from three-point range.
Gerardot scored 16 of her points in the first half while shooting 7-of-10 from the field in the first 20 minutes. Gassion skied for a career high 11 rebounds in the effort.
For the eighth game this season, Indiana committed less than 10 turnovers (9).
IU will host Illinois this Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3:30 p.m. ET live on the Big Ten Network.
Postgame Notes
• The Hoosiers tallied 18 assists on 23 field goals for the game as nine different players recorded at least one assist.
• Trailing 20-14 in the first half the Hoosiers outscored the Wolverines 18-6 to close the half and go into the locker room up 32-26. Indiana held Michigan to just two field goals the final eight minutes of the half.
• Indiana committed less than 10 turnovers (9) for the eighth time this season.
• Senior Tabitha Gerardot scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds. It was her 12th double-figure scoring game of the season. Gerardot scored 16 of the Hoosiers 32 points in the first half.
• Freshman Larryn Brooks scored nine points and added five rebounds and five assists.
• Freshman Alexis Gassion scored eight points and pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds. She also contributed with three assists and three steals.
• Senior Simone Deloach scored six points and pulled down six rebounds for the Hoosiers.
