BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 37 Indiana women's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season on Thursday to No. 8 Northwestern, 7-0.
Northwestern (6-3, 1-0) started on the right foot as the No. 1 and No. 2 Wildcat tandems defeated Indiana (7-2, 0-1) in both matches to take the doubles point.
In singles, NU scored two quick team points with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 out of the gate. The remaining matches on the courts all went to a third set.
At No. 1, #30 Veronica Corning of Northwestern took the first set against Indiana's #65 Katie Klyczek. Klyczek battled back in the second set as she trailed 4-3 to rally back and take the set 6-4. But Corning would handle the third set with a 6-3 triumph to clinch the match for Northwestern.
In the No. 6 match, IU's Shannon Murdy fell 6-0 in the opening set, but bounced back to take the second set 6-4. Northwestern's Manon Peri would go on to take the match with a 6-2 win in the final set over Murdy.
Indiana's Sophie Garre (No. 3) and Alecia Kauss (No. 4) both hung tough in their respective matches, but fell in three sets.
IU will next host a double-header on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the IU Tennis Center against No. 27 Tennessee at 11 a.m. ET and then Ball State at 4 p.m.
