BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana softball team split in its second day of the Hoosier Classic at Andy Mohr Field, winning its opening game of the day 6-1 against Wright State before falling in a heartbreaking 10-9 contest to Illinois-Chicago. The Hoosiers are now 8-17-1 on the season.
INDIANA 6, WRIGHT STATE 1
Lora Olson earned her fourth win of the year after throwing 6.0 innings of work against Wright State. The righty scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out five. Brooke Boetjer was effective in closing out the game for the Hoosiers, tossing one shutout inning to help seal the win.
Indiana tallied five hits against the Raiders including a three-run homer from freshman CaraMia Tsirigos. Breanna Saucedo posted her sixth multiple-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3 at the plate and scored one run. Michelle Huber drove in a pair of runs for Indiana in a 1-for-2 offensive outing.
One swing of the bat gave Indiana a 3-0 lead in the opening inning. After Saucedo singled and Meyer walked, Tsirigos blasted a no-doubter over the left-center field fence to give Indiana a 3-0 lead.
The Hoosiers pushed its lead to four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Meyer led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second after a throwing error to get Abraham at first sailed into the fence. Tsirigos walked to load the bases for Michelle Huber. The sophomore sent a ground ball over to the right side of the infield, but the throw home was not in time to get Abraham, pushing Indiana ahead 4-0.
The Raiders chipped away at Indiana’s lead in the top of the fifth with bases loaded single to center field. Wright State looked to threaten further as it had runners on every base and just one away; however, a ground ball to Shelby Gogreve was turned for a double play to send the game into the bottom of the fifth.
In that inning, the Hoosiers plated a pair of runs on just one IU hit – a double by Huber down the left field line to plate pinch runner Kayla Mathewson from second base. Lehman drove in the second run on a bases loaded ground ball that was sent to first to get her for out number two. Huber scored from third on the play to put the home team in front 6-1.
Heading into the top of the seventh, Brooke Boetjer replaced Olson in the circle to close out the final inning to preserve the 6-1 victory.
UIC 10, INDIANA 9
The Indiana offense provided enough firepower to keep the Hoosiers within striking distance and put together a near come-from-behind victory in the seventh, but five Hoosier errors would plate three unearned runs in the contest and help the Flames escape Bloomington with a 10-9 win over Indiana.
Meaghan Murphy got the start for the Hoosiers, allowing four runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings. Lora Olson (4-8) became the pitcher of record after checking into the game tied at 4-4 in the third. She went 3.2 innings and surrendered two earned runs while striking out one.
Saucedo, Tsirigos, Abraham and Gogreve each earned multi-hit efforts to help IU to 12 in the contest. Gogreve and Tsirigos both knocked in a pair of RBI while Michelle Huber scored a career single-game best four times.
After surrendering three runs to start its game with the Flames, Indiana’s offense answered loudly with three runs of its own in the bottom of the first. A two-out walk paired with a double from Farmer set up Tsirigos for a two-run single up the middle. Indiana tied the score at three thanks to a double by Kayla Mathewson that scored pinch runner Alyssa Rosati from second base.
Following another UIC run in the second, Indiana again tied the contest when a bases loaded pickoff attempt by UIC’s Eric Hampton sailed into the outfield and allowed Huber to score from third.
The Flames plated three unanswered before Indiana scraped together some offense with a Lehman RBI-single to set the score at 7-6.
UIC’s bats built a 10-6 lead heading into the Hoosiers’ final at bat. Huber was hit by a pitch to start the rally and advanced to second on a single by Abraham. Mathewson’s ground ball gave IU runners on the corners and one away with Gogreve at the plate. The senior battled through an eight-pitch at bat for an RBI-single to right that cut UIC’s lead to three. Lehman put the ball in play to the right side, and the throw to second was in time for the second out of the inning; however, UIC’s attempt to turn the double play went awry as the throw to get Lehman at first was off target. Mathewson hustled in to score on the muffed throw and bring Indiana within two. A two-out single from Saucedo placed runners on first and second for Meyer. Meyer punched a single to left center to drive in one and move the tying run to third base, but UIC’s Elaine Heflin managed to get the strikeout to end the game.
The final day of the Hoosier Classic has been cancelled due to the high possibility of snow and cold temperatures tomorrow, so IU will return to action Tuesday, March 18 when they host Kentucky at Andy Mohr Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. ET.
