TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Hoosier Baseball battled back from a five-run deficit at Indiana State (16-5) to pull within a lone tally in the seventh before the Sycamores blew the doors open with a half dozen scores in the home half to power ISU's 12-8 final score. Indiana (12-10) threatened with three runs in the ninth before the final out was recorded.
Eleven total pitchers were used as the two squads combined for 20 runs on 26 hits. Neither team was sharp defensively, allowing a total of seven unearned runs to come across.
Indiana State took its first five-run advantage after the second inning. The Sycamores used four hits to score three in the first and took advantage of a two-out dropped fly ball to notch two more in the second stanza.
Tim O'Conner led off the top of the third with a single through the left side of the infield. He moved up to second on a passed ball, scooted over to third via a fly ball and Sam Travis' team-high 18th RBI escorted O'Conner home to put IU on the board.
A two-out infield single allowed Indiana State to get back the run in the sixth, regaining a five-run margin at 6-1.
The Hoosier lineup came alive in the seventh, kick-started by a Casey Smith single and Will Nolden walk to force a pitching change with no outs. As a right-handed Sycamore was called from the bullpen, head coach Tracy Smith elected to go with left-handed swinging Craig Dedelow as a pinch hitter. Dedelow wasted little time making it the right call, bouncing the very first pitch over the third base bag and rolling into the left field corner. The double brought in both Smith and Nolden. Dedelows came around to score himself two batters later when Casey Rodrigue laid down a bunt and the Sycamore pitcher rifled his throw past the first baseman for a two-base error. Kyle Schwarber stepped in next and drilled a pitch through the right side to carry in Rodrigue and cut the IU deficit to 6-5. A pair of fly balls followed and the Hoosier threat came to an end.
Indiana State got one back right away in the bottom half by the virtue of some well-executed small ball and two singles. The Hoosiers then botched a potential inning-ending double play to open up the flood gates. The Sycamores pounced on the opportunity, cranking out three more hits and five runs to pull ahead 12-5.
The Cream and Crimson attempted one last comeback in the top of the ninth. Indiana posted a 3-spot and clawed within 12-8 before a strikeout represented the 27th and final out.
