IU Men 14th After Day 1 of NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - The Indiana men's swimming and diving team earned second swims and dives in every event entered on day one of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin, Texas.
The Hoosiers are currently 14th with 31 points.
It looked like a team effort in the 200 individual medley consolation final as Cody Miller, Steve Schmuhl and Eric Ress all finished within 1/100th of a second of each other. Miller and Schmuhl tied for second in the race and 10th overall with a time of 1:43.12. That is the sixth-fastest time in IU history. Just 1/100th of a second behind was Ress in 1:43.13, ranking seventh on the all-time IU list.
In prelims, Miller finished one spot out of the championship final, taking ninth in a time of 1:42.27. That is the fourth-fastest time in IU history. Schmuhl qualified 12th (1:43.19), with Ress 15th (1:43.41).
Indiana finished day one with an 11th-place showing in the 400 medley relay, clocking in at 3:08.02. That is the third fastest time in IU history as James Wells, Miller, Max Irwin and Anze Tavcar went the distance for the Hoosiers.
In prelims, a school-record time of 3:07.53 in the 400 medley relay for Ress, Miller, Irwin and Tavcar put the Hoosiers in 12th place and into the consolation final. That topped the old record of 3:07.98 set at the Big Ten Championships last month.
Emad Abdelatif finished 16th in the 1-meter springboard competition, tallying 317.55 points in the consolation final. He scored 348.00 in prelims to advance. Darian Schmidt placed 29th in the field with a score of 292.50.
Day two of competition will feature the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 freestyle relay and 3-meter diving.
