Hoosiers Drop Two In Boise

BOISE, Idaho – The Indiana softball team opened up the SpringHill Suites Invitational with a pair of losses to Weber State and Boise State this afternoon, dropping the Hoosiers record to 2-16-1 on the season. Indiana opened the day with a 5-3 loss to Weber State before falling in the bottom of the seventh to host Boise State, 3-2.
WEBER STATE 5, INDIANA 3
The Hoosiers fell 5-3 to Weber State in their first of two games this afternoon. Indiana outhit the Wildcats 8-7 with Breanna Saucedo and Brianna Meyer registering two hits apiece. Saucedo was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Meyer doubled and singled while drawing a walk. Michelle Huber also doubled in a 1-for-3 effort at the plate, and Jenna Abraham and Kassi Farmer connected on RBI singles for the Hoosiers.
Meaghan Murphy got the start and pitched 6.0 innings against Weber State. She struck out seven while allowing five runs on seven hits while walking a pair of batters.
The Hoosiers struck first in the contest in the second inning of play. Huber led off the frame with a double to right and advanced on a ground ball out to second. With two away, Saucedo connected on a shallow ball to center field that gave Indiana a 1-0 lead, as Huber crossed home plate uncontested.
Weber State knotted the game at one on back-to-back hits and added a pair of runs with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead over Indiana.
IU responded with two runs in the top of the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles from Abraham and Farmer; however another two-run shot by Weber State gave the Wildcats a 5-3 lead. That score would remain final as neither team scored throughout the remainder of the contest.
BOISE STATE 3, INDIANA 2
The Hoosiers held the lead through the first five innings, but the Broncos plated an unearned run to tie the game in the sixth and eventually drove in the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Indiana 3-2.
Lora Olson did well in the circle despite the loss. The junior hurled 6.0 innings with four strikeouts and allowed just one earned run as the other two BSU runs occurred on IU miscues.
Offensively, Indiana tallied just three hits with a double by Saucedo and singles from Meyer and Olson.
The Hoosiers jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning. Kassi Farmer reached after getting hit by a pitch and slid in safely before the throw to second that gave IU runners at first and second. Olson laid down a sacrifice bunt, bringing Shelby Gogreve to the plate. The senior laid down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to score Farmer and give Indiana a 1-0 lead.
A sacrifice fly ball by Jenna Abraham sent Saucedo across the plate and doubled Indiana’s lead at 2-0, but Boise State responded in the bottom half of the inning after a throwing error ultimately led cut the Hoosiers’ lead to one.
Another Indiana error tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, sending it into the bottom of the seventh in a 2-2 tie. The Broncos lead off the inning with a single and a bunt that eventually placed runners on second and third. A ground ball sent to the left side forced Gogreve to dive and make a play. She tried to get the throw home from her knees, but the runner slid in under the tag to give Boise State the win.
Indiana will again see both Weber State and Boise State tomorrow in their second day at the SpringHill Suites Invitational.
