Indiana Downs Penn State to Open Big Ten Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. - The seventh-seeded Indiana women's tennis team took down tenth-seeded Penn State on Thursday to open the Big Ten Tournament, 4-1. The Hoosiers will take on second-seeded Northwestern on Friday.
In doubles, Sophie Garre and Shannon Murdy teamed up at No. 2 to defeat PSU's Carmen Sandor and Katherine Whiteaway by an 8-3 margin. Kayla Fujimoto and Alecia Kauss then clinched the doubles point for IU with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Taylor Shukow and Marie Frederique of Penn State.
In singles, Murdy gave IU its second point with a dominant performance at No. 5 with her 6-0, 6-4 triumph over Penn State's Whiteaway. Kauss also won in straight-set fashion with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Shukow.
Sophie Garre then clinched the match for Indiana as she gave up only two games in her 6-0, 6-2 victory over PSU's Katia Blik. All remaining singles matches went unfinished.
Indiana and Northwestern will get started at 3 p.m. ET tomorrow afternoon in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.
