BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 43 Indiana women's tennis team edged the visiting Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday on the IU Varsity Tennis Courts, 4-3.
In doubles, Shannon Murdy and Sophie Garre of Indiana (16-6, 4-3) defeated Iowa's Ellen Silver and Shelby Talcott, 8-2, to start the match. The other two doubles matches were very competitive. It took a tiebreaker for Annette Dohanics and Katie Zordani to earn the No. 3 match victory over IU's Kayla Fujimoto and Alecia Kauss, 8-7 (8-6).
Iowa (8-10, 1-6) then clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 1 as Morven McCulloch and Ruth Seaborne snuck past Indiana's Katie Klyczek and Carolyn Chupa, 8-6.
In singles, Chupa put IU on the board first with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Iowa's Talcott. Garre followed with a straight-set win of her own, dominating the second set against McCulloch, 7-5, 6-0.
Gabrielle Rubenstein played at the No. 6 position for the Hoosiers and earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Iowa's Silver. Kauss then clinched the match for Indiana as she downed Dohanics at No. 4, 6-4, 6-4.
Indiana will hit the road next weekend to take on Ohio State (April 11) and Penn State (April 13).
