FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Led by a goal from Femi Hollinger-Janzen in the 64th minute, the Indiana men's soccer team capped its preseason slate with a 1-0 win over No. 6 Washington Saturday night at the ShinDigz National Soccer Festival in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The first 20 minutes of the match was a back-and-forth affair with neither team getting much going on the offensive side. With 21:15 to play in the first half, Hollinger-Janzen played a ball to Tanner Thompson on the right side as the sophomore brought it down but had his shot saved.
With 11 minutes on the clock in the first period, Patrick Doody ran past his defender and played the ball into the box. Jay McIntosh made a run onto the ball but Washington goalkeeper Ryan Herman got a hand on it first. Less than three minutes later a give-and-go between Hollinger-Janzen and McIntosh led to a shot from McIntosh at a tight angle which went right into Herman's arms.
Washington's best chance of the first half came with 5:54 to play as IU goalkeeper Colin Webb was forced to come off his line and punch out a pair of crosses. Justin Fiddes also got a shot off on that sequence, with Webb forced to make a quick reaction save at close range.
After Andrew Oliver had a shot blocked 15 minutes into the second half, the Hoosiers finally broke through just minutes later with Hollinger-Janzen's score at 63:18. Coming from the left side Thompson played a ball centrally to Hollinger-Janzen, and the junior poked it past UW goalkeeper Spencer Richey for the only score of the match.
A flurry of late shots from the Huskies that did not test IU goalkeeper Sean Weidman gave UW a 13-8 shot advantage for the match. Both teams finished with three shots on frame.
Indiana opens the 2014 regular season this Friday as it plays host to the Georgetown Hoyas as part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
