BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Women's Soccer team (4-3, 0-1 Big Ten) opened Big Ten play on Friday night with a tough, 2-1 overtime loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Buckeyes scored the tying goal with on a penalty kick that was awarded with two seconds left in regulation. They would add the game-winning goal in the 97th minute of overtime.
"It was an unfortunate result for us tonight, because I think we played our best soccer of the season," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "We came in with a plan and executed it perfectly for 89:58 of this game. We will make sure we learn from this, be disappointed tonight and then come back tomorrow ready to prepare for a very tough Penn State team on Sunday."
Indiana took the lead in the 38th minute when Jessie Bujouves scored her team-best fifth goal of the year directly off a corner kick from Tori Keller. For Keller, it was her first point of the season.
After the Hoosiers controlled play for the remainder of the half, the teams went into the locker room with IU holding a 1-0 edge on the scoreboard.
In the second half, Indiana controlled play for the most part and threatened the Ohio State goal a number of times. Then with the clock ticking down under 10 seconds left in regulation, Ohio State sent the ball into the top of 18-yard box. As the OSU player attempted to make a move, the referee awarded the Buckeyes a penalty kick with just two seconds showing on the clock. Kayla Varner stepped up and converted the PK to tie the game.
Then in the overtime session, Indiana got a great look in the early going when a OSU defender misplayed a long pass intended for Mykayla Brown. The freshman ran onto the ball and appeared to be 1v1 with the OSU keeper. But as she entered the box, an OSU defender was able to get a piece of the ball before Brown could get a shot off, thwarting the Hoosiers hopes of a sudden victory goal.
The Buckeyes were able to notch the game-winning goal in the 97th minute on a header in the box after a cross from the left side.
"I think this will serve as motivation for us as a team," Indiana senior defender Tori Keller said. "We have had the ball bounce the wrong way a couple times already this season, but we are going to use that to push us forward. We have nothing to hang our heads about."
The two teams finished the game with 12 shots apiece and Ohio State had a 7-5 edge in corner kicks. Sarah Stone made three saves in goal for IU while Megan Geldernick had four for the Buckeyes.
The Hoosiers will host No. 8 Penn State on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Bill Armstrong Stadium. Admission is free and it is "Bark in the Park" day, where fans are encouraged to bring their dogs - big or small (as long as they are up-to-date on their vaccinations).
