BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A match which saw the Indiana men's soccer team dominate possession in the second half and hold a 20-6 shot advantage did not end in its favor as No. 16 Penn State came away with a 1-0 win in the Big Ten opener for both schools Saturday night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana drops to 3-1-1 on the season (0-1 B1G), while Penn State improves to 4-0-1 (1-0 B1G).
The night got off to a festive start for Indiana as the team debuted a new third kit which featured the iconic Indiana candy stripes. The Hoosiers got off the first shot of the game with a header from Femi Hollinger-Janzen in the 12th minute.
Unfortunately that would be a theme of the night for Indiana as a majority of its 20 shots were just off targets, curling wide or high, as well as hitting the side netting. In the 22nd minute, a corner kick from Tanner Thompson was flicked back out to Patrick Doody, but his shot also went out over the cross bar.
Less than four minutes later the Nittany Lions scored what would be the only goal of the match. After an initial corner kick from Brian James was cleared, he played his second attempt to the top of the box, where Mason Klerks lined a shot from 20 yards out for his first goal of the season.
That was one of just three shot attempts for Penn State in the half as the remaining 19 minutes was all Indiana. Sub Jack Griffith wrestled himself free at the top of the box in the 33rd minute with his shot attempt sailing high. As the clock ticked down to three minutes remaining in the first half, Trevor Swartz found Doody on the far post, with Doody's header just wide.
The second half was all Indiana as the Hoosiers kept the Nittany Lions on their heels for nearly the entire 45 minutes, tallying 13 shots in the period.
With 23:12 to play a toe flick from Billy McConnell was just off frame, inching over the cross bar. He had a nearly identical flick in the 75th minute, this one requiring a save from Penn State goalkeeper Evan Finney.
The 77th minute produced a line-drive shot from Hollinger-Janzen that was wide, and in the 88th minute a curling shot across the goal mouth from Jamie Vollmer landed to the left of goal.
Even in the waning seconds of the match Indiana was knocking on the door. A corner kick from Doody with 12 seconds on the clock bounced around in the box, where IU goalkeeper Colin Webb headed it just off frame and into the side netting.
Andrew Oliver, Dylan Lax and Doody paced the IU offense with three shot attempts each.
The Hoosiers are back at Armstrong Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 17 as they face in-state foe Butler. Game time is 7:30 p.m. ET. For information on purchasing tickets to the Hoosiers' next home game, click here.
