“You’ve got to celebrate any milestone you achieve,” said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. “But we take it one game at a time and this was a really important regional win for us. But it’s so cool for this team to be the only group that holds that record.”
Both teams took shots to start the game, but could not find the back of the net. Indiana recorded four shots on goal in the first period, including a close one by Karen Lorite that was saved by Miami’s Alysa Xavier as the clock winded down.
“We just emphasized the importance of using easy passes and staying composed,” said Robertson. “They put a lot of pressure on us and we forced some passes. The second half we wanted to make the game easy. The second half was a completely different mindset – it was a matter of time and belief that we would finish.”
Junior Nicole Volgraf found Heilman on the breakaway to put Indiana on the board at the 53:15 mark. This is the third time this season the duo of Volgraf and Heilman have connected for a Hoosier goal.
Senior goalkeeper Maggie Olson kept the RedHawks (1-6) out of the cage with 2 saves.
Indiana will travel to Ball State on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Cardinals.
