BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana men's soccer team put up 20+ shots for the second-straight match but once again was stymied in the final third as the Hoosiers and Butler Bulldogs finished in a 0-0 tie through 110 minutes of action on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium Wednesday night.Indiana is now 3-1-2 on the season, while Butler is 2-2-3. This is IU's fourth shutout this season, matching its shutout total for all of 2013.
The Hoosiers forced Butler goalkeeper Andy Holte to make five saves in his first appearance of the season, but the most audible gasp from the crowd came with 8:40 left to play in the first overtime. A corner kick from Patrick Doody into the mixer was headed on by a Butler player in an attempted clearance. The ball landed at the foot of Derek Creviston, whose shot from about two yards out bounced off the right post. Creviston was just inches away from giving Indiana its first goal since the third minute of the Dartmouth came on September 9.
One of Femi Hollinger-Janzen's five shots on the night came 14 seconds into the second overtime period, as he hit a line drive from distance that was caught by Holte.
The first half was a fairly even affair with IU holding a slight 8-6 advantage in the shot tally but the Bulldogs forcing two saves by goalkeeper Colin Webb. In addition to the two shots on frame, a header from Zach Steinberger off a corner kick was just wide of the frame in the 28th minute.
For the Hoosiers, Jamie Vollmer and Hollinger-Janzen had early looks, including a shot on a rope from Vollmer that was wide right in the 17th minute. In the 22nd minute Tanner Thompson brought the ball to the middle of the field and took two touches before sending a shot wide.
While the first half was a back-and-fourth affair, the final 65 minutes was all Indiana, outshooting the Bulldogs by a 14-4 margin, with five looks on frame.
In the 55th minute Vollmer had a deflected shot saved by Holte. In the 64th minute, a shot from Thompson was kept out of the net as it was parried by Holte, but it got away from him and Brad Shaw was ready to pounce, sending his shot wide right.
With seven minutes left in regulation, Thompson crossed a ball into the box that Trevor Swartz was inches from getting a foot on, but it did force Holte off his line as he chased the ball, creating a nervous moment for the Butler faithful in attendance.
In the 85th minute Hollinger-Janzen had a header opportunity but couldn't get any pace on the ball as Holte came in for the save. In the 86th minute, Jack Griffith produced a line drive that was also saved.
The Hoosiers waste no time in getting back into Big Ten play as they travel to Piscataway, New Jersey for their first Big Ten matchup with Rutgers. Game time is 7 p.m. ET at Yurcak Field.
