CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The Indiana Women’s Soccer (4-5, 0-3 Big Ten) traveled to No. 22 Illinois on Thursday and came away with a 2-0 loss to the Fighting Illini. Illinois scored both of their goals on set plays just outside the box, as the IU defense held them in check during the run of play.
"Today we didn't give the necessary effort and sense of urgency at the start of the game," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "I didn't think we really starting playing like we should until 30 minutes into the game, and that is way to long. Overall, I thought we defended pretty well. We had two fouls outside our box in both halves and Illinois took advantage. Set plays are going to win and lose you games and it cost us one today."
For the game, Illinois held a 20-4 advantage in shots and 7-4 edge in corner kicks while Sarah Stone made six saves in goal for the Hoosiers.
"I think we had some solid team defending today," Stone said. "We were able to contain them in the run of play and keep them off the board there, but their set pieces got us today. We know we can do better in that area and we will continue to work on it as we get deeper in to Big Ten play."
It would be Illinois that got on the board first in the 20th minute when Jannelle Flaws took a free kick from just outside the box in the IU defensive third of the field. She curled it inside the left post to give the Illini the 1-0 lead.
In the 58th minute, Flaws once again stepped up to take a free kick from on top of the box and she curled it around the right side of the IU wall of defenders for her second goal of the year to put Illinois on top, 2-0.
Indiana looked to respond quickly after the second free kick, as Abby Smith and Jessie Bujouves combined on the attack. After Smith's initial shot hit the left post, the Hoosiers retained possession. Smith then found Bujouves in the box and she was taken down by the Illinois defender, resulting in a penalty kick for the Hoosiers. It would be Smith that would step up to take it but her attempt was saved by the Illinois goalkeeper for a corner kick for IU. The ensuing corner kick ended up on the foot of Taylor Coley, who sent a blast towards the upper 90 but was headed away at the last second by the Illinois defender.
The weekend roadtrip continues on Sunday, when Indiana travels to Northwestern for another Big Ten matchup. The game will start at 1:00 p.m. ET and will be available online on BTN Plus (subscription required).
