BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana men's soccer team did something it had not done since September 13, 2013 when it ponied up for four goals in a 4-2 win over UCF Wednesday night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.Indiana improved to 5-1-2 on the season with the victory, while the Knights dropped to 1-5-1.
The Hoosiers got goals from all over the lineup Wednesday night, and they didn't waste time getting on the board as senior Jamie Vollmer's first tally of the season gave IU the 1-0 lead just 2:41 into the match. A ball from Patrick Doody found Matt Foldesy making a run up the far sideline, and the junior played a perfect cross into the box as Vollmer made the easy tap-in.
Indiana's quest for a shutout wouldn't last long as the Knights pressed on the attack and found the equalizer in the 12th minute from Jake Weiss. Weiss took a shot from the top of the 18 that caromed off the ankle of Doody and bounced off the underneath of the cross bar, past an outstretched Colin Webb for the score.
The Knights nearly had their second goal of the night in the 14th minute when a shot from Romario Williams at close ranged was stopped by Webb.
Indiana kicked it into gear in the 32nd minute when freshman Trevor Swartz came in off the bench and picked up a "sniffer" goal for the 2-1 lead. Femi Hollinger-Janzen initiated the scoring play with a line drive that was saved by Sebastian Evers, with the ball falling to Swartz who pounced on the put-back for his second goal of the season.
Exactly 40 seconds later Doody scored what would be the game winner with a shot that can only be described as a golazo. Coming off a Tanner Thompson corner kick, a half clearance from UCF landed at Doody 25 yards out, and the senior one-timed a shot that hit nothing but net for his second goal of the year.
The Hoosiers had three goals on seven shots in the first half, while UCF put up six attempts.
UCF wasted no time in cutting IU's lead back to one in the second half with a 49th minute score from Williams. Williams' third goal of the season came from the top of the 18 has he took three touches and hit a shot into the upper 90.
It was just 10 minutes later that freshman Grant Lillard sealed the victory in the 59th minute with his first career goal and a 4-2 lead. The 6-4 Lillard is always a target for balls into the penalty area, and tonight it was service from Billy McConnell whipped into the 18, where Lillard headed the ball home.
Indiana and UCF finished tied in the shot tally with 12 apiece, as IU put six on frame and five for the Knights. Nine of IU's 11 starters had at least one shot attempt in the match.
The Hoosiers return to Big Ten play on Sunday, September 28 as they play host to the Northwestern Wildcats. Game time is 2:30 p.m. ET and is game two of a doubleheader with the IU women.
