COLUMBUS, Ohio -
The Indiana women's soccer team (3-2) saw four different players score - including two that scored their first collegiate goal - on their way to a 4-1 victory over George Mason at Bill Davis Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University.
"Our depth really showed for us today," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said following the win. "We were able to put some people in off the bench and they got us a goal just before halftime, which was huge. And then we played much better in the second half and our depth is what allowed us to add the third and fourth goals."
Early in the first half, both teams played through the midfield, with neither really mounting any sustained attack. But as the half wore on, the Hoosiers slowly gained some control and were able to culminate it with a goal in the 41st minute.
After goalkeeper Sarah Stone gathered a GMU shot, she quickly distributed the ball out to defender Molly Pittman. She took a couple touches and found Kailee Feinstein at midfield and she took a touch before sending a ball in behind the GMU defense that Mykayla Brown used her speed to track down. After gaining possession, she dribbled in towards the keeper and put home the shot inside the far post to give the Hoosiers the 1-0 lead.
For Brown, it was her first collegiate goal while Feinstein registered her first collegiate point on the play. Molly Pittman picked up the second assist on the play, her second assist of the season.
That goal seemed to spark Indiana and they carried it over into the second half. After starting the half with numerous well-designed plays in the attacking third, they finally put home the go-ahead goal off the foot of Jessie Bujouves. The junior drilled a ball from the middle of the box after freshman Kayla Smith found her with the pass. Bujouves was able to strike the ball with enough force to beat the GMU keeper and put Indiana in front, 2-0, in the 55th minute. It is the team-leading third goal of the season for Bujouves while the assist went to Smtih, her second of the year.
The Patriots (1-4) converted a penalty kick after the Hoosiers were whistled for a foul in the box in the 62nd minute, cutting the IU lead to 2-1.
But the Hoosiers remained on the attack and in the 65th minute, Abby Smith found Rachel Romero streaking through the middle of the GMU defense. The Patriots goalkeeper came out to challenge Romero, but Romero beat her to the ball and the keeper took her down. The referee awarded the Hoosiers a penalty kick and issued the GMU keeper a red card. Abby Smith stepped up and easily scored the PK to give IU a 3-1 lead.
Finally, in the closing minutes, Mykayla Brown was back on the attack. And once again she used her outstanding speed to create the goal. She beat the GMU defenders to a ball on the right sideline and then cut in towards the goal. Her cross into the box went through the hands of the GMU keeper and freshman Annelie Leiter was waiting to score her first collegiate goal. Brown earned the assist, her third point of the game.
Stone made three saves in goal to pick up the win in goal.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Sunday in Columbus when they take on Dayton. The first kick is slated for 11:00 a.m. and fans can listen to the game online at bit.ly/IUWSAudio
