COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Indiana women's soccer team completed the weekend sweep with a thrilling 2-1 win over Dayton at Jesse Owens Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University. Senior Jordan Woolums goal in the 87th minute proved to be the game-winner for the Hoosiers (4-2).
"I'm very proud of our progress through the non-conference part of our schedule," Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. "Getting a couple wins this week was big for us as we get ready to start Big Ten play at home next week. We continue to grow as a team and I'm looking forward to continuing the progress of this young team."
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes. Both teams had three shots, two corner kicks and three saves in the first half.
The second half started out much the same, but the Hoosiers eventually broke through the Dayton (2-3-1) defense in the 57th minute. Woolums was in the middle of the play as she sent the crossing pass into the box at the back post, where Jessie Bujouves was waiting to put home the marker. It was the fourth goal of the season for Bujouves while Woolums picked up her third assist of the year.
For the next 20 minutes, Dayton put pressure on the Indiana defenders but IU was up to the task, clearing away threats. But the Flyers finally put one in the back of the next in the 81st minute to tie the game at 1-1.
At that point, the Hoosiers went back on the attack, looking for the win in regulation. Freshman Kayla Smith played Woolums in behind the Dayton defenders. From there, Woolums sent a high, arching shot towards the back post that tucked inside the crossbar and out of the reach of the UD keeper to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead.
"When I got the ball," Woolums said, "I took a look at the keeper and saw she off of her line a little bit so I put it on frame and found the right spot to get it by her."
Unlike earlier, the Hoosiers would not allow Dayton to mount a final rally for the equalizer and closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule with their third straight win.
The game-winning goal for Woolums is the third of her career, meaning half of her six career goals have been game-winners.
Redshirt junior Sarah Stone once again played well in goal, making a number of key saves during the second half stretch when Dayton was looking for the equalizer. She finished with four saves in the game to get the win, her third of the year to match her total from the 2012 season.
Indiana has yet to allow more than two goals in a game this season and will open Big Ten play at Armstrong Stadium on Friday against Ohio State, with first kick slated for 7 p.m. ET. Streaming video will be available through "BTN Plus", which is available by going to www.btn2go.com.
