NOTRE DAME, Ind. - A goal from Patrick Doody in the third minute and a penalty kick save by IU goalkeeper Colin Webb kept the Indiana men's soccer team undefeated in 2014 with a 1-0 win over Dartmouth on the final day of the weather-delayed Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in Notre Dame, Indiana.
Indiana is the Tournament champion with a 2-0 record. Doody, Webb, Dylan Lax and Billy McConnell were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Hoosiers were on the attack early, going up 1-0 in the third minute. It started by earning a corner kick 40 seconds in that was cleared out. IU was not done on the offensive end when it was awarded a free kick at the top of the 18 after Billy McConnell was fouled. Doody took the free kick and looped it over everyone into the upper 90 for his first goal of the season.
It also marks Indiana's first set piece score this season and the fastest to start a match.
Webb picked up his first save early as he calmly collected a header from Wyatt Omsberg off a corner kick. He added another in the final five minutes, diving to his right to stop a shot from Matt Greer.
Dartmouth nearly put the ball in its own net for the Hoosiers in the waning minutes of the first half as a defender tried to clear McConnell's throw-in but knocked it back toward goal. Goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland was able to stop the shot in time.
With two minutes to play in the first half, redshirt freshman Brad Shaw came into the match for his first ever appearance.
Dartmouth led the shot tally 5-2 at the break and was up 3-2 in corner kicks.
Dartmouth was given a chance to tie the match in the 49th minute when it was an awarded a penalty kick after Matt Greer was taken down in the box. Colin Heffron stepped up to take the penalty but Webb had his shot read the entire time and went down to his right for the save. The rebound went back out to the Big Green but was cleared for a corner kick.
Just the third shot of the day from the Hoosiers came in the 52nd minute as a long throw from Jamie Vollmer found the head of Grant Lillard. Lillard's attempt went over the cross bar for a goal kick.
The Hoosiers killed time off the clock with a long possession sequence starting in the 75th minute that culminated with a shot from Shaw into the side netting.
Indiana finished the game with a 10-9 advantage in the shot tally, out-shooting the Big Green by an 8-4 margin in the second half. Oliver led the Hoosiers with three attempts, two of which were on goal. Webb finished his day with four saves.
Indiana is back at Armstrong Stadium this Saturday as it opens Big Ten play against the Penn State Nittany Lions. Match time is 7:30 p.m. ET.
