BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- New lineup, no problem. Indiana escaped with a 76-73 win over Penn State on Tuesday evening at Assembly Hall, improving to 13-4 and 3-1 in Big Ten play.
Robert Johnson led Indiana with 20 points, while Troy Williams had 15, Stanford Robinson added a season-high 12 and James Blackmon contributed 11 points to round out IU's double-digit scorers.
Collin Hartman, inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in place of the injured Hanner Mosquera-Perea, recorded a career-high tying eight points, including a timely 3-pointer with 2:03 remaining that put Indiana ahead, 76-69.
After two quick buckets from Penn State (12-5, 0-4) to grab a four-point lead, the Hoosiers went on a 17-2 run over the next 5:34 to give Indiana a 17-6 lead with 13:03 remaining in the opening stanza. Williams scored five points in that stretch, including a thunderous one-handed dunk followed by a free throw.
However, the Nittany Lions would respond with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 17-17 midway through the half.
Robinson scored all eight of his first half points in the final 4:09 to lead the Hoosiers to a 39-34 halftime advantage.
A 9-2 Penn State run tied the game at 51-51 with 13:07 remaining, but Indiana responded with a 16-4 stretch that gave the Hoosiers their largest lead of the game at 67-55 with 7:29 left on the clock, punctuated by a triple from Blackmon.
After Hartman's 3-pointer gave the Hoosiers a five-point lead, Penn State's Travis Ross knocked in back-to-back baskets to make it a three-point game with 52 seconds remaining.
The Nittany Lions' D.J. Newbill missed a 3-pointer with three seconds remaining as Brandon Taylor grabbed the rebound and sunk a three just after the buzzer.
Up next, the Hoosiers travel to Champaign, Ill. to face the Fighting Illini on Sunday. The game will be played on the Big Ten Network at 1 p.m. ET.
