MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Indiana fell short on the road to No. 23 Minnesota on Sunday in Williams Arena, 65-61. Three Hoosiers scored in double figures, led by 12 from both Larryn Brooks and Amanda Cahill.
IU (12-5, 2-4) never trailed until a critical Hoosier turnover in the final minutes led to the Gophers taking a 60-59 lead on a Carlie Wagner 3-point field goal with 1:18 remaining in the game.
The Hoosiers then regained the lead when Tyra Buss found Jenn Anderson down low for a layup to give IU a 61-60 advantage with 55 seconds to play.
Minnesota (16-2, 5-1) countered with another Wagner field goal at the 37-second mark to give the Gophers the lead for good. Indiana turned the ball over on its next possession before Minnesota iced the game with free throws.
In the first half, Indiana jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the game’s first 2:13. The Hoosiers hit their first seven shots from the field to build a 15-7 edge after an Alexis Gassion jumper.
Minnesota trimmed the IU lead to just one, 29-28, before Tyra Buss hit a 3-pointer and runner followed by a Lyndsay Leikem jump shot to cap a 7-0 IU run to push the lead to 36-28. The Gophers scored eight straight points in the final 3:39 of the half to make it a 36-36 halftime score.
Cahill added five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the effort as Brooks dished for four assists and nabbed three steals.
Anderson finished with 10 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor. Gassion had nine points and eight rebounds in the effort. Buss tallied seven points with a team-high six assists.
The Hoosiers passed the ball well, finishing with 20 assists in the game and also adding 11 steals. IU shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field as a team.
IU will now hit the road for its next game at Penn State on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. ET.
