WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. --Trailing all day it came down to the 400 freestyle relay for the Indiana women's swimming and diving team, and they came through with first and third-place finishes for a 151.5-147.5 dual meet win at Purdue. The men were also victorious over the rival Boilermakers, posting a 162-138 victory Saturday at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.
Trailing Purdue by five points heading into the final race, Haley Lips, Brooklynn Snodgrass, Cynthia Pammett and Kennedy Goss posted a win by more than two seconds in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.36. Kaitlin Kitchens, Ali Rockett, Gabriela Rajic and Delaney Barnard added a third-place finish for good measure with a time of 3:24.68.
The men had an 11-point cushion heading in to the final event but took it to the wall going 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay. Anze Tavcar, Mike Hurley, Max Irwin and Blake Pieroni won in a time of 2:59.74, while Sam Lorentz, Jackson Miller, Ali Khalafalla and Grayson Smith were second in 3:02.09.
Both the women and men opened the day with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay, with Marie Chamberlain, Snodgrass, Gia Dalesandro and Grace Vertigans clocking in at 1:42.89. Bob Glover, Tanner Kurz, Irwin and Khalafalla went 1:30.13.
Miller took first in the 1,000 free for the men (9:13.89), while Lips was second for the women (9:50.00). Blake Pieroni led a 1-2 finish for the men in the 200 free (1:37.55), with Tavcar second (1:38.77). Goss took second for the women (1:48.41).
Snodgrass kept her undefeated streak in the backstroke in tact, winning the 100 (53.83) and 200 back (1:55.79) with a pair of NCAA B cuts. Chamberlain was second in the 100 back (55.01-NCAA B Cut), while it was Shelby Carroll (2:00.07), Allie Day (2:00.29) and Chamberlain finishing 2-3-4.
Glover (49.34) and Ryan Gordon (49.59) went 1-2 in the 100 back, with it going Gordon (1:49.05) and Glover (1:51.57) as 2-3 in the 200 back.
Dalesandro swept the butterfly races winning the 200 fly in 2:00.21 and the 100 fly in 55.17. Irwin won the 100 fly in the men's race (48.55) and took third in the 200 fly (1:49.98). It was a pair of second-place finishes for Hoosiers in the 50 freestyle with Vertigans going 23.55 for the women and Tavcar 20.81 for the men.
Michael Hixon was victorious in the men's 1-meter springboard with a score of 411.30, with James Connor third (393.30). Connor led the way on the platform with a second-place showing (437.25). Jessica Parratto was also a springboard winner with a score of 328.35 on the 1-meter, and took second on the platform (264.15).
A 1-2-3 finish for Indiana in the 100 freestyle was led by Vertigans' time of 50.70. Lips was second (50.90) and Pammett third (51.23). Pieroni added another win in the men's race (44.39), with Tavcar second (45.02) and Thermos third (45.54).
Lips won the 500 freestyle at 4:47.81, and it was 1-2 for the men with Miller first (4:29.31) and Smith second (4:34.96). It also went 1-2 IU in the 200 individual medley for the women with Gia Dalesandro (2:02.58) and Sam Lisy (2:04.42).
Both teams close out the dual meet season next weekend, with the women hosting Louisville on Friday, Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. ET for Senior Day. A select group of men will also race Evansville that evening at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The rest of the men will travel to Columbus, Ohio on Jan. 31 to race the Buckeyes and Louisville at 1 p.m. ET.
