EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Indiana fell to Michigan State inside the Breslin Center on Wednesday night, 72-57. IU cut the lead to six points midway through the second half before a late MSU run sealed the win for the Spartans.
Karlee McBride led Indiana (12-8, 2-7) with a career-high 17 points.
Early on, an old fashioned three-point play by Amanda Cahill and a jumper from McBride gave Indiana a 12-9 lead at the 12:41 mark of the first half.
Michigan State (11-10, 3-7) then scored 12-straight points to build a 21-12 lead before a McBride layup halted the momentum. The Hoosiers later cut the deficit to five, 26-21, thanks to free throws from Jess Walter and a Larryn Brooks layup with 3:43 on the clock.
The Spartans then went on to end the half outscoring the Hoosiers 13-4 to take a 39-25 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, MSU built its lead to 49-31 after a Becca Mills jumper with 15:44 remaining. Indiana then strung together a 15-3 run capped by a McBride 3-point field goal at the 12:06 mark to cut the deficit to six, 52-46.
The momentum was short lived as IU went the next 7:43 without a field goal and the Spartans took advantage with a 17-1 run during the drought to put the game out of reach.
Poor shooting doomed the Hoosiers all night as IU shot just 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from the free throw line.
McBride shot 7-of-12 from the field and added three assists, two steals and a block. Cahill added nine points and led Indiana with eight boards.
The MSU trio of Tori Jankoska (28 points), Aerial Powers (28 points) and Mills (12 points) combined to score 68 of Michigan State's 72 points.
The Hoosiers will next play at home against Purdue on Monday, Feb. 2 at 8:30 p.m. ET live on the Big Ten Network.
