CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Indiana women’s tennis team won twice on Saturday with victories over Cincinnati and Xavier in a double-header inside the Western Tennis and Fitness Club. The Hoosiers topped UC, 5-2, before taking down the Musketeers, 6-1.
In the Cincinnati (0-1) match, the Hoosiers struck first by taking the doubles point to start. Sarah Baron and Katie Klyczek cruised to a 6-1 win over UC’s Natalia Abdalla and Hannah WIlle in the No. 3 match. Stephanie Smith and Shannon Murdy later clinched the point for IU as they outlasted Katya Bure and Ali Miller in a match tiebreaker in the No. 2 position, 7-6 (4).
Indiana (5-0) then went on to win four singles matches against UC. Klyczek defeated Kelley Poggensee-Wei, 7-5, 6-2, in the No. 1 match. At No. 2, Alecia Kauss downed Bure in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Baron (No. 5) and Mary Beth King (No. 6) were also victorious in singles for Indiana against the Bearcats.
Against Xavier (2-1), the doubles point came down to the last match on the court. Indiana’s Baron and Klyczek won at No. 3 before Xavier took the No. 1 match. Smith and Murdy then outlasted Christina Di Lorenzo and Alex Brinker in the No. 2 match, 7-5, to give the Hoosiers the double point.
In singles, Kauss won her No. 2 match over Brinker in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Schmider gave IU its third point with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over XU’s Lauren Ghidotti.
The match was clinched by Murdy in the No. 5 match as she downed Xavier’s Daniella Patton, 6-2, 6-2. Other IU winners against the Musketeers included Baron (No. 6) and Guiterrez (No. 3).
The No. 52 Hoosiers will return home for a pair of matches next weekend as they welcome No. 47 DePaul and Butler in a double-header inside the IU Tennis Center beginning at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 7.
