KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Seniors Sam Monette and Daniel Bednarczyk won the Ohio Valley UTSA/ITA Regional Championships in doubles and Monette captured the singles title Monday at the University of Tennessee.
With the titles Monette and Bednarczyk qualify for the UTSA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 12-15.
Paired against the Ball State due of Lucas Anderson and Andrew Stutz the Hoosiers got out to a quick 3-0 lead in set one and never looked back, taking the opening set 6-1.
In set two the Hoosiers broke Ball State for the first point and got out to a 4-1 lead before ending the match with a 6-2 win in set two.
"We knew we had work to do after our last tournament going into this week," Monette said. "Myself and Dan were very focused in the days leading up to this tournament and we stayed very positive and it feels good to win this tournament."
After a quick break Monette got back on the court and wasted no time, winning his opening set in the singles final, 6-1. Monette powered his way to another title with a 6-3 victory in set two to take the match.
"This tournament was really good for all of us," Monette said. "We have a veteran team that understands the game and some great new faces. We know we have a lot to work on, but we are excited with the outcome of this week and ready to keep on improving."
