BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For a seventh time this season, Indiana found itself in a one possession game in the fourth quarter against Michigan State on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the Spartans rallied late to win 52-26.
Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com looks back at the week that was and gets a head start on previewing the matchup to come. The Hoosiers (4-4, 0-4) have a bye week this week, so we'll use some of the extra time to focus on the season to date.
Sudfeld Continues To Climb: Senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld set another career record Saturday, tying Kellen Lewis (2006-08) for Indiana's career passing touchdowns record with 48. He finished 23-of-37 for 308 yards on the day, which is slightly more impressive considering Indiana only had possession for roughly one-third of the game.
Booker's First Score: Senior receiver Andre Booker finally broke into the end zone, hauling in a 3-yard grab in the third quarter. In doing so, Booker became the sixth different Indiana receiver to catch a touchdown pass this season.
Turnover Team: Indiana's defense forced another turnover against Michigan State, extending its record to 14 consecutive games with a forced turnover. The Hoosiers can partially thank redshirt sophomore linebacker Marcus Oliver for that. He forced his fourth fumble of the season against and now has nine takeaways in 22 career games.
Paige's Best: Redshirt junior receiver Mitchell Paige quietly put together one of the most productive games of his career. He hauled in a career-high eight receptions for 99 receiving yards just one week after setting a career-high in receiving yards against Rutgers.
Open Date: Indiana won't have an opponent this week. The Hoosiers will have a week away from competition before returning to action at Memorial Stadium on Nov. 7 against Iowa. Following the game against the Hawkeyes, the Hoosiers will stay home to play Michigan before a two-game road trip to end the regular season against Maryland and then Purdue in the annual battle for the Old Oaken Bucket.
Leading The Conference: Indiana's passing offense continues to be the strongest in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are averaging 287 yards per game through the air, leading all conference teams. The second-best passing attack belongs to Nebraska, who averages 260.6 passing yards per game. Sudfeld, who's been the catalyst for the league-leading aerial attack, leads the conference in passing yards per game (292.7) and passing efficiency (148.9).
Onside Kicking Successful: By coincidence, Indiana is the only team in the Big Ten to recover an onside kick attempt this season. Three other teams have tried to recover their own kickoffs, but they are a combined 0-for-4.
Mangieri Applying Pressure: Senior defensive end Nick Mangieri still ranks among the Big Ten's best pass rushers. He has seven sacks on the season, ranking him in a tie with Michigan State's Shilique Calhoun for the fourth-most sacks by an individual player.
Oakes Near The Top: Griffin Oakes is quietly putting together an efficient season. The redshirt sophomore kicker has connected on 10-of-12 field goal tries, putting him in a four-way tie in kicking efficiency in the conference. He also sits sixth in the conference in scoring, averaging 7.6 points per game.
Howard Piling Up Yards: Junior running back Jordan Howard missed half a game against Ohio State and two full games afterword due to a nagging ankle injury, but he's still second in the Big Ten in rushing at 131.2 rushing yards per game. The UAB transfer only trails Ohio State's Ezekiel Elliott, who's averaging 141.3 yards per game on the ground.
