BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kevin Wilson has said all year that he believes he has a winning football team. Heading into a week nine bye week with four wins and four games left, that goal is still obtainable, but it's going to require work.
The Hoosiers (4-4, 0-4) are using their bye week to rest veterans, develop younger players and prepare for their final four-game stretch, which will ultimately determine how successful Indiana is.
IU will return to action at Memorial Stadium for a two-game homestand against No. 10 Iowa and No. 15 Michigan before closing the season out with road trips to Maryland and Purdue.
"There's a lot of good. It's not good enough," Wilson said. "Most people in most things want to give in. That's not what I'm about, and that's not what we're going to be about. We're not going to make excuses. We need to win. We're here to win. We're going to win. And we're going to have a great opportunity with Iowa and the next four games. Let's get ready and go after it."
The rest comes at a seemingly opportune time for an Indiana team that Wilson said played fatigued in last weekend's loss to Michigan State. The Hoosiers are keeping practice light this week, sticking to a weight training regime and limiting full football activities while only beginning to look ahead at upcoming opponents.
"As we wrapped up our development and had some meetings, some talks with some older guys that as much progress as you think you might have made, it's not good enough," Wilson said. "We're going to ask you to take care of your body and dig deeper because we need to keep progressing."
Even during the light bye week, coaching never stops. Wilson is sending assistant coaches on the recruiting trail this week to seek out future Hoosiers.
As per NCAA regulations, Wilson can't comment on the specifics of recruiting, but he said he's still determining how many scholarships will be available and is looking at bulking up on the lines and at tight end after focusing mostly on adding skill players last recruiting season.
"I think we need big guys in this class," Wilson said. "I think the core of it's big bodies, and then we've got to see where we are with young quarterbacks, and how that goes."
