BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In the moments following Indiana's loss to Rutgers, one fan at Memorial Stadium in particular caught head coach Kevin Wilson's attention.
This fan was upset and wanted Wilson—and everyone else around him—to know. He was screaming and shouting profanity-laced complaints for anyone willing to listen.
Wilson heard.
"I loved his passion," Wilson said. "I want more of that."
Wilson shared that story during his weekly radio show appearance on Wednesday's edition of Inside Indiana Football. At the surface, Wilson's point could have been misinterpreted.
He wasn't making light of the situation. He understood the fan's frustrations. They mirror his own.
"It's not OK to walk around campus without victory," Wilson said. "This program needs to parallel the success of this school."
Wilson is tired of losing and he's doing whatever he can to snap his team out of its five-game losing streak. He started with shaking up the practice schedule this week with winning against No. 15 Michigan in mind.
Rather than give his team its normal day off Monday, Wilson led a light morning practice and moved the conventional off day to Thursday. While only a slight change, Wilson hopes it will freshen up his players' legs and minds later in the week when performance matters most.
"It's just a subtle tweak to get a jump on Michigan and maybe not be as heavy on the back end with them," Wilson said. "I think our guys are really putting a great deal of effort in the prep. They're putting a great deal of effort on the game. That being said, we need to be smart in how we're practicing."
The immediate response has been positive.
Wilson was upbeat at the end of practice Wednesday, stressing that there's still a quarter of the season left to be played and nobody is slowing down yet even with Senior Day festivities planned for pre-game at Memorial Stadium.
In terms of Michigan, Wilson called the Wolverines "as good or better" than anyone Indiana has played so far this season. His words are high praise considering Michigan is the fourth top 15 team to play Indiana in the last six weeks.
But those numbers don't matter to Wilson, just like they don't matter to the fan yelling from the stands.
Because by the end of the game, they both want the same thing—wins.
"We want to win. We need to win," Wilson said. "There's still 25 percent of the season left, so even though it's Senior Day, the last home game we have, we have so much football left to play."
