BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University rowing team unveiled an impressive new Rowing Team Boathouse last week, as the team officially opened nearly 10,000 square foot building that will house all of the team's boats and equipment.
"This boathouse is part of us trying to give you the tools that you need to be successful," Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass said as he addressed the rowing team and coaches. "The new locker room and team room in Assembly Hall is part of that and we have some additional things planned. So thanks so much for what you do and we, as the athletic department, will continue to 'pull our oar' if you will, and continue to support you and I'm glad that we were able to make this building a reality."
Construction on the new boathouse started in May 2015, as construction crews tore down the former boathouse to begin the five-month process of getting the new one up and running in time for the start of fall practice for the team. The new boathouse is nearly three-times larger that the old boat house and has three bays dedicated to housing the boats.
There are enough racks in the boathouse to hold up to 18 eight-oar shells, 12 four-oar shells and over 20 small boats on individual racks. The racks are the Focus Rack System made by Focus Tool & Engineering, Inc., and allow the boats to be moved in and out of storage easily and effectively with less risk of damage to the boats. There is also separate storage area for all the oars that go to the boats and additional equipment.
The bays also allow ample room for the team to meet prior to practice and go over practice plans for the day. There is also room for a number of Erg machines in the bays.
Another new space in the boathouse is a fourth bay that is temperature controlled and will be used to repair the boats and prepare new boats when they arrive.
"This facility will allow our program so many more opportunities," Indiana rowing head coach Steve Peterson said. "It allows us to have so much more equipment that we need to continue the success that we have had the last couple years. We are very appreciative of the support we have always received from the athletics administration and the university administration. We know that we are supported very well and we cannot say thank you enough to everyone who made this building a reality for us."
There is a fifth bay in the boathouse that is designated exclusively for the Indiana University Rowing Club, which is part of the Division of Campus Recreational Sports. The bay includes racks to hold up to six boats as well as significant storage space.
