BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana football climbed within one point of No. 10 Iowa yesterday before the Hawkeyes scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and held off the Hoosiers' comeback 35-27.
Every Sunday, IUHoosiers.com looks back at the week that was and gets a head start on previewing the matchup to come. The Hoosiers (4-5, 0-5) will celebrate Senior Day this weekend against No. 16 Michigan (7-2, 4-1) at Memorial Stadium.
Jordan's back: IU junior running back Jordan Howard returned to form, collecting 174 yards on 22 carries to go along with two touchdowns of 37 and 29 yards. Howard's been talked about often this season, but his production continues to rival that of any other running back in the Big Ten. Through seven contests, one of which was cut short with his initial injury, Howard is averaging 137.3 rushing yards per game. He trails only Ohio State's Ezekial Elliott (138.2) in the conference.
Running attack keeps going: Thanks largely to Howard carrying on former-Hoosier Tevin Coleman's own streak, Indiana has had a 100-yard rusher 17 times in its last 22 games. Coleman had 11 last season. Howard has five this season.
Oliver never left: Redshirt sophomore linebacker Marcus Oliver notched his fourth double-digit tackle game of the season, making a team-high 11 stops. This has become a trend of late for Oliver, IU's leading tackler. He now has double-digit tackle games in three of his last four contests.
Third-down woes: For a second consecutive game, Indiana struggled getting its opponent off the field on third down, which players said was critical. Iowa completed 7-of-14 third-down conversions, while facing an average distance of 7.1 yards. Head coach Kevin Wilson called IU's own third-down defense the team's "Achilles' Heel." The Hoosiers will look to correct it in practice this week before playing Michigan.
Takeaway streak snapped: Indiana's defense has made a habit of forcing turnovers all season but failed to do so against Iowa. The Hawkeyes didn't fumble or throw an interception, snapping IU's streak of 14 consecutive games with a takeaway.
Third-quarter strong (again): Indiana's defense once again kept its opponent off the board in the third quarter. The Hoosiers blanked the Hawkeyes in the third stanza, making it six games this season where IU hasn't allowed points in the third quarter. Indiana has outscored opponents 92-27 in the third period through nine games.
Sudfeld at the top: Senior quarterback Nate Sudfeld is now IU's leading touchdown thrower in program history. His 11-yard completion to fifth-year senior tight end Michael Cooper gave him 49 in his career, moving him into first all-time.
Michigan up next: Things don't get much easier this week for Indiana with No. 16 Michigan coming to Bloomington. The Wolverines are coming off a dominant 49-16 win against Rutgers. Their only losses came week one against Utah and three weeks ago against Michigan State on the final play of the game, a fumbled punt the Spartans returned for a touchdown as time expired.
Another ranked opponent: This isn't a rerun—Indiana is playing another top 20 team. No. 16 Michigan marks the fourth-ranked opponent the Hoosiers have played this season, joining top 10 teams Ohio State, Michigan State and Iowa. This season marks the first time since 2010 that the Hoosiers have played four ranked opponents in the same season.
Wolverines Win on defense: Michigan has the top scoring defense in the Big Ten, allowing just 11.9 points per game. They lead the conference in total defense, allowing 240.0 yards per game. Earlier this season, Michigan had a three-game shutout streak, blanking BYU, Maryland and Northwestern in consecutive weeks.
