HENDERSON, Nev. - The Indiana softball team fell to 2-5 on the year as the Hoosiers dropped a 4-1 decision to the University of Texas-El Paso on Friday evening.
The Miners (2-5) darted out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning as UTEP hit five singles in the inning, including a 2-RBI shot by Hope Moreno.
UTEP added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI-double by Ashley Eldridge.
The Hoosiers threatened in the top of the sixth after a two-out walk to Brianna Meyer, followed by a Kassi Farmer single and Rachel O’Malley walk, loaded the bases for Mena Fulton. However, the freshman struck out swinging to end the Hoosiers’ inning.
A one-out double by Uden in the top of the seventh, followed by a UTEP error to put Shannon Cawley on second, set up an RBI single by Kelsey Dotson. However, Cawley was thrown at home to end the game.
Freshman pitcher Emily Kirk picked up her first loss of her career, giving up three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work. Miranda Tamayo came in with a strong outing in relief, giving up just one run on five hits in 4.2 innings.
The Hoosiers return to the Stephanie Lynn Craig Complex tomorrow as they do battle with Cal State Northridge and New Mexico.
