HENDERSON, Nev. - Coming back from two separate three-run deficits the Indiana softball team picked up its second win of the season against Utah Valley on Friday, 8-7. Junior Michelle Huber went 4-for-4 with one run and three RBI in the game.
After the Wolverines (3-3) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, Huber’s left field double scored freshman Taylor Uden to put the Hoosiers (2-4) on the board.
Two batters later, senior Brianna Meyer’s groundout scored Shannon Cawley from third base. Cawley scored three runs in the game, going 2-for-4. The tying run came one batter later on an RBI single from Kelsey Dotson to score Huber.
During the next inning, Cawley scored her second run of the game as the Hoosiers took their first lead of the afternoon.
However, the Wolverines were not finished as they had four batters cross the plate in the top of the fifth inning off of five hits, including an RBI triple to left field by Kristy Snyder. Senior pitcher Miranda Tamayo stepped into the circle and retired the final batter of the inning. Tamayo then retired three of the first four batters faced in the sixth inning.
Following Uden’s second walk of the game, Cawley reached on a fielder’s choice with an error by Utah Valley’s second baseman to advance Uden to second base. Huber’s fourth hit of the game scored Uden, closing the Wolverines lead to 7-5.
After a walk to sophomore Kayla Mathewson, Meyer belted a single to center field, tying the game by scoring Cawley and Alyssa Rosati, who was pinch running for Huber. Mathewson then grabbed the lead for the Hoosiers, running in on a throwing error from center field.
Tamayo (1-3) picked up her first win of the season, tossing two strikeouts and giving up just one hit in 2.1 innings of work.
Up next, the Hoosiers face UTEP this evening at 6:45 p.m. ET. in their second game of the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic.
