CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.. - The Indiana softball team dropped its first game of the day to Loyola Marymount on Friday, 13-5.
Loyola Marymount (4-5) threatened from the start as the Lions loaded the bases in the top of the first with no outs. However, a throw out at home and a double play held Loyola Marymount scoreless in the frame.
The Lions didn’t wait long as they brought in five runs in the second inning. Two leadoff singles followed by a one-out double by Alicia Brown put two on the board. Two batters later, Stephanie Maciel hit a three-run home run to left center field.
Loyola Marymount added three more runs on a pair of RBI singles to extend the lead to 8-0 in the top of the third.
The Hoosiers (2-11) would respond in the bottom portion of the third inning as a pair of two-out singles put two on base for senior Shannon Cawley, who brought in two runs on an RBI double.
After Indiana added another run on a fielder’s choice from freshman Rebecca Blitz, Nicole Kaiser hit the Lions’ second home run of the game on a two-run shot to center field to make it 10-3.
Kelsey Dotson, who hit a home run in yesterday’s loss to No. 12 UCLA, went long on a two-run shot to left-center field to cut the Lions’ lead down to 10-5.
However, Loyola Marymount added three more runs in the top of the seventh after Alex Finie sent the Lions’ third home run of the game over the fence.
The Hoosiers return to the diamond this afternoon as Indiana takes on Cal Poly at 6 p.m. ET.
