GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 22 Indiana picked up its third win of the season Sunday at Fluor Field after a Xavier throwing error on a sacrifice bunt allowed the Hoosiers to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a final 7-6 score.
After Craig Dedelow walked to open the bottom of the final inning, Brad Hartong stepped up to the plate in bunt mode to advance Dedelow to second. Hartong's bunt rolled along the first base line before Xavier picked it up. The throw to first base brushed Hartong and continued to roll into the outfield, allowing Dedelow to circle the bases and reach home for the game-winning run.
Indiana, the designated home team in its final game at the First Pitch Invitational, snapped a three-game skid as the final score was decided by a one run for the fourth time this season and the second straight day.
"It showed the toughness and the maturity of our team that they didn't stop," head coach Chris Lemonis said of his team's response. "They were ready to head back and compete."
It was an eventful game throughout, with at least one team scoring in eight of the nine innings. Indiana started a busy day for the scoreboard operator with four runs in the first inning, marking IU's most in an inning and the first time the Hoosiers have scored in the opening frame this season.
Casey Rodrigue walked, reached second and stole third before scoring IU's first run on Scott Donley's two-RBI single that also scored Brad Hartong, who walked.
Logan Sowers tripled and stole home on Austin Cangelosi's strike out to give IU a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Indiana never trailed but Xavier chipped away until tying the game in the eighth inning, setting up a heart-racing finish.
The Hoosiers didn't have the weekend they had hoped for, but boarded the bus back to Bloomington in winning spirits.
"We just didn't play as clean as we had the first weekend," Lemonis said. "We'll get back to the practice field Monday and try to get our edge back a little bit."
