CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Indiana's ninth-inning rally fell short Friday afternoon as the Hoosiers dropped the opening game of their series at the College of Charleston, 4-2, at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
IU faced a shutout heading into the final frame before racking up four hits to score two runs in the top of the ninth, both scores coming with two outs.
Scott Donley, Nick Ramos, Will Nolden (RBI) and Isaiah Pasteur (RBI) all singled while Donley and Ramos scored, but it was too little, too late for the Hoosiers.
Indiana more than doubled CofC's hit total, matching a season high with 11 to the Cougars' five, but struck out 12 times as Taylor Clarke accounted for 11 of those to set a career high in eight innings.
IU junior RHP Scott Effross tossed a career-high six strikeouts in his least amount of work this season, pitching four innings.
The Cougars
scored two runs in the first inning, the most scored against IU in the opening frame, and added solo home runs in the third and sixth innings to extend their lead.
Indiana and College of Charleston continue their series Saturday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. ET. The game can be listened to online at IUHoosiers.com.
