Hoosiers Split Double-Header on Saturday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 52 Indiana women’s tennis team split its two matches on Saturday inside the IU Tennis Center. The Hoosiers fell to No. 47 DePaul, 5-2, before topping Butler in the late match, 7-0.
In doubles vs. DePaul, the Blue Demons won the No. 3 match to start before IU’s Shannon Murdy and Stephanie Smith took the No. 2 match over DU’s Rebeca Mitrea and Yuliya Shupenia, 6-4, to even things up. Indiana then earned the doubles point as Kim Schmider and Alecia Kauss won by a 6-3 margin in the No. 1 position over Jasmin Kling and Patricia Fargas.
DePaul started to take control as singles began with the Blue Demons winning the No. 2-6 matches to take the team win. Indiana’s Klyczek survived an exciting three-set No. 1 match over Patricia Lancranjan, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
The Hoosiers responded well in the second match of the day against Butler. Carolyn Chupa paired with Alecia Kauss at No. 3 to blank Butler’s Michelle McFerran and Jordan Minnick, 6-0. The Bulldogs won the No. 1 match before Paula Gutierrez and Klyczek clinched the double points with a win in the No. 2 position.
IU’s good fortune continued into singles starting with Sarah Baron’s straight-set triumph over Angelina Qin, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4. Stephanie Smith followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jordan Minnick at No. 6. Klyczek then clinched the win in the No. 1 position for the Hoosiers as she downed Bailey Padgett , 6-1, 6-2.
Other Indiana singles winners included Kauss (No. 2), Gutierrez (No. 3) and Mary Beth King (No. 5).
The Hoosiers will return to the IU Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 14 to take on Marquette at 11 a.m. ET.
