BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Behind multi-hit games from four Hoosiers, the Indiana softball team defeated Bowling Green in its home opener on Thursday, 3-2.
Senior pitcher Lora Olson picked up the win for Indiana (6-18), tossing a complete game and giving up just two runs on 10 hits.
Bowling Green (5-10) threatened from the get-go, putting two runners on in each of the first two innings. However, the Falcons were held scoreless until an RBI single from Marina Cobbs scored Aspen Searle to make it a 1-0 Bowling Green lead.
The Hoosiers would respond in a big way in the fifth inning, plating three runs with two outs on the board. After freshman Rachel O'Malley stole second base after being hit by a pitch to get on, she scored on Erin Lehman's double down the right field line. Lehman, who is leading the team with a .400 average, was brought in one batter later on a Kelsey Dotson RBI single. Shannon Cawley added a third run for Indiana when a double to deep center field scored Alyssa Rosati, who was running for Dotson.
Lehman, Cawley, O'Malley and Michelle Huber each recorded two hits in the victory.
After Bowling Green chipped in a run on an RBI single by Searle in the top of the sixth, Olson retired the next four batters in order to secure the win.
The Hoosiers return to Andy Mohr Field tomorrow as they take on North Dakota State at 4 p.m. in the second game of the Hoosier Classic.
