BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kevin Yogi Ferrell led the Hoosiers with 21 points, but Indiana fell 74-72 against Michigan State on Saturday at Assembly Hall.
Nick Zeisloft and James Blackmon Jr. recorded 17 points each for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers (19-12, 9-9) played a back and fourth game with the Spartans (21-10, 12-6) in a game with nine ties and 11 lead changes.
Ferrell had 11 points in the first half and Indiana and Michigan State were tied 34-34 at the halftime break.
The Hoosiers scored the first four points of the second half, but a Michigan State 9-0 run put the Spartans up 43-38 with 16 minutes to play.
The Spartans built that lead to 11 points, but the Hoosiers responded and cut it to five points at 69-64 with 1:26 to play.
Zeisloft connected on five three-pointers in the game, including three in the second half. He drilled a three with 27 seconds left to bring the Hoosiers to within three, 72-69.
Michigan State fouled Blackmon with five seconds left and he made both to make it 72-71.
The Spartans added a free-throw to go up 73-71 and Ferrell was fouled on the next posession. He connected on one of two and Michigan State escaped with the 74-72 victory.
Ferrell became just the fifth player in IU history to record 1,000 points, 400 assists and 300 rebounds. He also extended his nation leading streak of games with a three-pointer to 62 and moved to 27th on the Indiana all-time scoring list with 1,309 points.
Next up the Hoosiers will travel to Chicago, Ill. for the Big Ten Tournament next week.
