BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana lost a 14-inning heartbreaker to Evansville, 2-1, on Wednesday evening at Bart Kaufman Field.
Both teams struggled offensively with no hits for either team between the eighth and 12th innings, including Indiana, whose drought extended all the way back to the third frame.
Evansville's winning run got on base by way of Indiana's second error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, setting up the game-winning RBI single from Travis Tokarek.
The Hoosiers appeared primed to respond in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two outs before Brian Jestice recorded his lone strikeout of the game to end the evening.
Evan Bell was credited with the loss, pitching the final stanza. Seven Hoosiers shared time on the mound, combining for 15 strikeouts to match a season high. IU was led by Ryan Halstead, who matched his career high to lead the Hoosiers with seven, pitching the 11th, 12th and 13th scoreless innings.
For the fourth straight game, Indiana scored in the opening inning to take the lead, thanks to doubles from Brad Hartong and Scott Donley, giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 edge.
Indiana put at least one man on base in the next four of the next five innings, but failed to put a run on the board as Evansville evened the score at one in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly, the last run until the 14th.
