ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana softball team dropped the series finale at No. 4 Michigan on Saturday afternoon, 7-1.
Michigan's Sierra Lawrence got things started for the Wolverines in the first on a lead-off solo home run to left. The lead was extended in the third frame after a pair of singles and a walk scored Abby Ramirez. Michigan (41-6, 14-2 B1G) looked as if it was about to add a few more runs after a long fly ball traveled deep into the Indiana outfield, but freshman Rebecca Blitz pulled it down to end the inning.
The Hoosiers (14-31, 5-10 B1G) got on the board in the fourth after singles from Kayla Mathewson, Kelsey Dotson and CaraMia Tsirigos loaded the bases for Brianna Meyer, who hit a bloop single to shallow right field to score Mathewson. However, Indiana was unable to capitalize further on the loaded bags as a strike out and ground out ended the frame.
After Michigan's Lawrence walked with one out, Sierra Romero was hit by a pitch to set up a three-run shot by Kelsey Susalla, which pushed Michigan's lead to 5-1.
A pair of walks to Dotson and Tsirigos put Indiana in good position to add runs in the sixth, but Michigan left fielder Christner made a diving grab on a Meyer fly ball and threw Dotson out for a double play.
Michigan added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth after a fielding error, single and walk loaded the bases for Romero, who brought in a run on a single to right-center. Ramirez then advanced home on a fielder's choice to make it 7-1.
Next up for Indiana, the Hoosiers travel to Muncie to face Ball State in a mid-week tilt on Tuesday before hosting Purdue for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
