BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After pulling within 10-8 in the sixth inning, the Indiana softball team gave up 11 seventh-inning runs as the Hoosiers fell in the series finale to Maryland, 21-8.
Three Hoosiers homered in the loss, including senior Shannon Cawley and juniors Katelyn Conenna and Kassi Farmer.
After Maryland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Shannon Bustillos, Indiana responded with a two-run home run by Cawley, her second in as many games, to score Rebecca Blitz.
After two scoreless innings, the Terrapins took the 3-2 lead on a Hoosier error and RBI single by Kylie Datil.
Farmer's fourth home run tied up the game as her solo shot to center made it 3-3 through four at Andy Mohr Field.
The Maryland offense exploded in the fifth, plating seven runs on five hits and an Indiana error.
However, Indiana wasn't finish yet as the Hoosiers scored five unanswered to make it 10-8 through six innings. Conenna got the scoring started with her second career homer to bring in Blitz and Rachel O'Malley.
Back-to-back RBI singles by sophomore Erin Lehman and Cawley scored Michelle Huber and Blitz, who recorded three runs on the day.
The Hoosier comeback would end there however as Maryland scored 11 runs in the seventh to put the game well out of reach. The scores came off of nine hits, including two base knocks from Erin Pronobis.
Indiana returns to Andy Mohr Field on Wednesday as the Hoosiers play host to in-state rival for Purdue for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcasted live on BTN.
